Deception Valley lies on the North Eastern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Deception Valley is made up of eighty kilometers of dried-up riverbed and one of the most spectacular areas to visit in all of Botswana.
The once great river now flows with short grasses and small oases of bushy trees. The water table lies as deep as fifty metres below this dry surface and is only reached by the root systems of a few of the larger trees.
During the heat of the day one can see game, and often lion, hiding from the sun within the shelter of these tree groves. During the rainy season vast herds of gemsbok and springbok congregate in this area to take advantage of the sweet sprouting grasses. At this time there is also an abundance of predators such as lions, cheetahs, brown hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, and lots of other game. The bird life is also spectacular.
Even without animals, the area reflects so faithfully the peace and immeasurable qualities that typify the true Kalahari that any visitor will find themselves amply rewarded for the journey.
But probably the main attraction is the extraordinary wilderness atmosphere, wide-open spaces and intense solitude and silence - an experience which waters the very soul. It is here in this incredible land of haunting beauty, under the smoldering African sun, that the Bushmen - more correctly referred to as San - have hunted and gathered for thousands of years. It is a place of immense timelessness and our vistors are left with indelible memories of this stunningly beatiful piece of the African Wilderness.
