VICTORIA FALLS

Itinerary &
Bookings

Victoria Falls:

"Just a few paces from the stunted scrub bush of the scorched dry Kalahari sands that stretch from Botswana to the banks of the Zambezi in northwest Zimbabwe, an ancient miracle continues to slake its thirst from the unceasing benediction that has sustained it for thousands of years." (Spectrum guide to Zimbabwe). Walking through the park and along the edge of the waterfalls, photographing the different views and appreciating their magnificence will take several hours and you should set aside the time to value this incredibly spectacular natural phenomenon.

The Victoria Falls are one of the most spectacular and memorable sights in the world. The Zambezi river widens to 1 700 meters at the falls and then plunges down a chasm 70 to 110 meters deep across its entire width. The force of the falling water - estimated at around 545 million litres per minute during the rainy season - sends clouds of spray up to 500 meters into the sky and sustains a lush rainforest all around. The spray gave rise to the falls' African name, Mosi-oa-Tunya (or "smoke that thunders").

Victoria Falls was the name given to the falls by the famous Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, in 1855.

Things to see and do in Victoria Falls:

  • The Victoria Falls are, of course, the premier attraction.

  • It's well worth a walk along the Zambezi river from the Livingstone Statue past the Big Tree (a giant baobab) to the Zambezi National Park entrance. Take care to watch out for wildlife like warthogs, hippopotamus, crocodiles and antelope. Elephants, buffalo, and lions are commonly sited.

  • Not far from the park entrance is Spencer Creek Crocodile Farm with 5 000 assorted crocodiles.

  • Back in town, the Falls Craft Village is worth a visit.

  • Very popular indeed and worth every cent is the Flight of the Angels - a scenic flight over the falls.

  • There is a large selection of game reserves in and around Victoria Falls where it is possible to go on a Big Five Game safari. World-famous game reserves like Hwange National Park and Chobe National Park in Botswana are also nearby and Bushways is poised to show you all of these destinations.
